The abstract ‘How chemical engineers can use AI Tools for a better world – AI tools for all process innovation steps to commercial scale’ has been selected for a keynote lecture. The lecture will be given by Jan Harmsen and Maaike Harmsen at CHISA2026, Prague in august 2026.

Here is short version of our abstract for the keynote lecture at CHISA August 2026:

New processes in industries are needed to solve large problems in this world. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can help chemical engineers to quickly generate those new processes by first making breakthrough designs, second by performing rapid experimental validations and third by well-planned commercial implementation.

For each of the innovation stages, ideation, concept, feasibility, development, engineering, and start-up, 10 AI tools have been identified by us to facilitate these breakthrough designs and execute scale-up. Furthermore, we developed a method identifying risks and traps of using AI tools for each of these stages, based on the general risks and traps currently identified when using AI Tools. Finally, we made an analysis, resulting in different approaches and skillsets between excellent chemical engineers and AI agents. The result of this analysis provides insight to the engineer on how to use the new AI tools in a responsible way.

I am also teaching a course wth Maaike Harmsen on this subject, June 10 in Delft, The Netherlands. You can read more information and sign up for this course here.
